How do I check my Vauxhall Astra's transmission fluid levels?

I recently noticed that my Vauxhall Astra's shifting has become more difficult. I suspect it may be due to low transmission fluid levels. How can I check and possibly top off the transmission fluid myself?

First, make sure your engine is off and the car is on level ground. Locate the transmission dipstick, usually labeled with a yellow or red handle. Pull out the dipstick and wipe it clean with a cloth. Reinsert the dipstick all the way and pull it out again, this time checking the fluid level. If it is below the minimum mark, you will need to add more. You can do this by using a funnel to pour the transmission fluid in through the dipstick tube. Be sure to use the correct type of fluid for your specific vehicle. If you are unsure, consult your owner's manual or a mechanic for assistance.

Another possible cause for difficult shifting could be a dirty or clogged transmission filter. In this case, it may be best to take your vehicle to a mechanic for a transmission fluid and filter change. They will be able to properly clean or replace the filter and ensure the correct amount of fluid is added. In general, it is recommended to have your transmission fluid and filter changed every 30,000 to 60,000 miles.
