The Check Engine Light can indicate a wide range of issues, from something minor like a loose gas cap to something more serious like a faulty sensor. The best thing to do is take your car to a mechanic to get the trouble codes read and diagnose the issue.

Make sure to check your other dash warning lights for any accompanying symptoms. For example, if the Check Engine Light is flashing, it could indicate a more serious issue and you should pull over and get your car towed to a mechanic.

Sometimes the Check Engine Light can come on due to an oxygen sensor needing replacement. This is a relatively easy and inexpensive fix that can improve your car's performance and fuel efficiency.
