Why is the check engine light on in my Vauxhall Insignia?

I recently bought a used Vauxhall Insignia and the check engine light has come on. It's been driving fine but I'm worried about possible underlying issues. Should I take it to the dealership for a diagnostic test or can I try to fix it myself?

Hi Maria, the check engine light can come on for a variety of reasons, some more serious than others. It's always a good idea to get it checked out, especially if it's a used car. I would recommend taking it to a mechanic or dealership for a proper diagnostic test. They will be able to tell you exactly what's causing the light to come on and if it's something that needs immediate attention. In some cases, it could just be a minor issue that can be fixed easily.

Hi Maria, I had the same issue with my Vauxhall Insignia and it turned out to be a faulty oxygen sensor. The dealership charged me a lot of money to fix it, but I found out later that it's a fairly simple and inexpensive fix that I could have done myself. So my advice would be to do some research on common issues with your car model and see if it's something you can fix on your own before taking it to the dealership.

Hey Maria, don't panic just yet. The check engine light can come on for something as simple as a loose gas cap. Before you take it to a mechanic or dealership, try tightening the gas cap and see if the light goes off after a few trips. If not, then it could be a slightly more serious issue. But it's always worth checking this first as it could save you some time and money.
